Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Advertising plays a crucial role in shaping societal perceptions and norms, including gender roles. In Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, advertising has been an instrumental tool in influencing how individuals perceive traditional and modern gender expectations. As a powerful medium, advertising communicates not only products and services but also social values, behaviors, and norms (Bello & Dikko, 2023). In Zaria, both traditional media (radio, TV) and digital platforms have been used to reinforce or challenge gender stereotypes, particularly in the context of family roles, career choices, and personal identities. The representation of men and women in advertisements can either perpetuate traditional gender roles or promote progressive shifts in attitudes. This study investigates how advertising in Zaria has influenced gender roles, particularly focusing on how gender is portrayed in ads and how these portrayals affect consumer attitudes and behaviors regarding gender expectations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing prevalence of gender-sensitive campaigns in advertising, there is limited research on how advertising specifically influences gender roles in Zaria. Gender roles are deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric of Nigerian society, and advertising, as a powerful cultural tool, can either reinforce or challenge these norms. This study seeks to examine the role of advertising in shaping gender roles in Zaria LGA, particularly how advertisements influence societal expectations of men and women in terms of family, career, and personal life.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it provides insights into the impact of advertising on gender role perceptions in Zaria, a region with a complex cultural and social fabric. Understanding how advertising shapes gender norms can inform more equitable and responsible advertising practices. The findings will also benefit advertisers, policymakers, and social activists by highlighting the potential of advertising to challenge or reinforce gender stereotypes.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on advertising in Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, and its influence on gender roles. It does not extend to other regions or forms of media beyond the scope of Zaria.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Gender Roles: Societal expectations regarding the behaviors, responsibilities, and activities deemed appropriate for men and women.

2. Advertising: The use of media to promote products, services, or ideas, which may also include cultural or social messages.

3. Consumer Attitudes: The predispositions or feelings consumers have towards gender representations in advertisements.
